Trying to hide that mid section? Try this!

Dear Tannya,

What am I doing wrong?  I want to hide my belly pouch and tend to wear only empire waist tops and ones with a lot of flowy fabric.  What other styles can I add to my closet?

Lost in layers

Dear Lost in layers,

You are not the only one who gets stuck in the habit of buying the same style that you feel works for you.  I do have to say the empire waist is a good option but although your mid section is round, you don't want to look like you have something to hide!  The secret is to create lines where there are no lines.

Let me explain.  Tanks that are clingy, will hold onto everything, tops that are too flowy will hide your figure completely.  The in between, is a top that skims your body and cut to the shape that shows enough, not too much :-)

Here are some great examples:

Why this works: This top has a gathered at the top, drawing more attention to the bust rather than the problem area.  It then drapes nicely right over and is not fitted in any place you don't want to show off.
Three Dots Gathered Front Top for $68 @ Nordstrom

Why this works: This is a silk piece by Micheal Kors and the cowl neck is super flattering.  This pieces is elegant and flows, not fitted but again skims over the body and a completely different cut than the first. Add variety to your closet.

Micheal Kors Cowl Neck Top for $68.50 @ Nordstrom

Why this works: Here we are creating major lines.  The darts, the cut are so slimming, it will create the illusion you were trying to create with the flowy fabrics!

Nanette Lepore "Your Eyes Only" Top for $248 @ Nordstrom

Now you have a few new options to choose from.  Try it out and let me know what you think!

How to add color to your neutral outfits

Ladies stuck in neutrals? Don't want to spend a lot on Summer clothing (especially since it started late)?

I have the solution! Make accessory purchases with color. Don't be afraid to mix and match a little.

This outfit consists of:

1. A necklace ( Gold Ice Pearl Necklace $50 @ renttherunway.com) This piece can go from Spring/Summer to Fall/Winter
2. Flowy top (Daina top $100 @musthaves.dk) Nice and flowy, great with fitted pants
3. Cropped Pant (Monogram Crinkle Pant $80 @ bananarepublic.com) A must have because there are other bottoms to wear besides denim!
4. Floral Flats ( Pointy floral Printed Flats $75 @ yesstyle.com) Everyone has a flat with buckles, try something different
5. Leather Pouch ( Ted Baker 'Bobble' Patent leather pouch $95 @ Nordstrom) What a nice color, great for a night out or for a pop of color to your outfit
6. The watch (Royale Watch $115 @ endless.com) Watches show sophistication

You wear a watch everyday and take your handbag everywhere, use them to your advantage!
Which accessory would you add to your outfit?
